Skin cancer is on the rise throughout the world. Whether it is because of a changing environment, a shift of population to warmer climates, or better diagnosis, many are at risk of developing this potentially deadly disease. At least half of Americans who live until the age 65 will develop skin cancer. Areas with higher UV have most risk for those living there. The southern U.S. has a higher risk than northern U.S. states. The highest rates of skin cancer are reported from South Africa and Australia. Kids are particularly vulnerable to skin cancer. Children who get severe sunburn have a much higher rate of skin cancer when they are adults. There are many available products such as UVA sunscreen and UV protective clothing to help prevent skin cancer. This article will help you to plan well before going out into the sun so you can provide your body with skin cancer protection.
Measures to prevent:
#1 Avoid going in the sun during times of day with the highest UV risk. This is typically an hour or two before and after noon. This would be a good time to take a break and go inside, get under some shade, or under an umbrella.
#2 Use a sunscreen with UVA protection and SPF 30 or greater. Apply the sunscreen at least 30 minutes prior to exposure to the sun. Make sure you rub in the sunscreen well in all areas that will be exposed. If you will be in the water or you may get overheated and sweaty make sure you use a waterproof sunscreen and reapply every 2-3 hours.
#3 If you need to be out in the sun during the high UV times of the day, wear UV protective clothing, a UV hat that protects your neck and face, and UV blocking sunglasses.
#4 Check all of your medications to make sure they do not have side effects resulting in increased sun sensitivity. Read the medication labels to see if there is a warning label or call your pharmacist.
#5 Cosmetics containing Alpha Hydroxy Acids as Ingredients increase sensitivity to the sun according to the FDA. Check the labels of the cosmetics before purchasing and if you have used these products wash them off thoroughly before exposure to the sun.
#6 Avoid high salt intake before exposure to the sun. A high salt intake can cause sensitivity to the sun.
